Welcome! This website is centered around my blog, which initially began as a sort of personal online journal, but has expanded to cover an eclectic range of topics. I am a social media enthusiast, emerging writer, and host of the Talking Taiwan podcast. Thanks for visiting and following along my personal journey!

Consider what value you can add to the world, when posting to social media.

Consider what value you can add to the world, when posting to social media.

This post is inspired by the “Social Media Tip of the Week” that I’m sharing on my Instagram feed today.

There is so much “noise” out there competing for people’s attention and some of it is... crap, or simply designed to shock or sensationalize in order to get people’s attention. I’d really like to invite people to think about what it is that they are putting out into the world, and if it is adding value.

Here are some reasons why it’s a good social media strategy to think about the value of what you post or share:

  1. Social media is such a crowded space. You need to find a way to stand out and be memorable. Creating or sharing something of value is a great way to do that.

  2. Sharing something of value is a great a way to demonstrate your expertise.

  3. It is a great way to introduce yourself and to build a relationship with a potential follower, client or customer.

  4. It will be easier to sell to someone later on. If what you give away for free is good, people will think that your paid content is probably even better.

  5. It lets people get a sample of your work or experience your content.

  6. It’s a chance to make a difference in someone’s life- if you share or post something useful, helpful or even entertaining.

  7. If what you post is really something of great value, people will want to share it with others and then you’ll get more exposure.

  8. BONUS TIP: When sharing content, in general it’s a good rule of thumb to follow is the 80/20 rule. Provide value 80% of the time and sell or promote 20% of the time.
